The Vilua Health Index
The foundation of a healthy life starts with understanding your current health state. With that knowledge, you can look forward to the possibilities for your health in the future, which depends on the actions you take now. The Vilua Health Index is a comparison between your current and probable future health states. The end result will yield answers to the following questions:
- How physically healthy are you?
- How mentally healthy are you?
- How likely are you to be able to work in a year?
The Health Index was developed by Dr. Jana Hapfelmeier, director of data and medical science development for Vilua, using models from both the U.S. and Germany. With her background in bioinformatics, machine learning, and data mining paired with a driving desire to help people live healthier, happier lives, Dr. Hapfelmeier created the Vilua Health Index to give users a data-based solution for their current and future health.
“It’s hard to know where to go if you don’t know where you stand at present,” explained Dr. Hapfelmeier. “The Index looks at all your data points and provides you with a number that represents your current state of health. It is a quality measure that compares your number to other health profiles in the Vilua database, people who went from one health state to another. Then it gives you a prognosis of what your health state could be in one year, depending on your actions.”
How does it work? Once you’ve downloaded the Vilua health app, you will be asked a series of questions about your daily behaviors as they relate to your health. Your answers will be analyzed against other health profiles in Vilua’s machine learning model to generate a number (or score) that represents your current health state. You will then be provided with a second number representing the health state you could be in at the end of a set period of time, or your future health state. The future health state number is an estimation of how your current health status could progress and a prediction for your continued health.
Having that number is key. You can pin today on your personal health timeline and track how your decisions affect your movement on the line, up or down depending on your behavior.
The Vilua Recommendation Engine
Once you have your Health Index number, the app guides you through your current and probable future health states as well as recommendations on how to stay healthy. The Recommendation Engine is an algorithm that takes the Health Index score and data from the other health profiles to make recommendations. Through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and your own unique data, your recommended steps are tailored specifically to you.
Someone else in the database may have received the same current health score as you, but because you answered the health assessment questions differently, your recommendations will be different. The information you receive will be relevant to you to motivate you to take action and see that your unique score could decrease if action is not taken.
Think of the Recommendation Engine as one of those choose-your-own-adventure books; you could choose one path and increase your score, or you could take an alternate path and lower your score. You are in control of your health journey.
The Vilua App Prognosis Model
The final step, which is not really final but ongoing, is the Prognosis Model. Each time you log in to the app, you can answer new assessment questions or update your existing answers so that your data is current. Your number will update based on the new information about your behaviors so that your score is always accurate.
For example, if you increase your good behaviors, you would have the chance to move up to a health state of, say, 0.86 (which is good). Conversely, if you start making poor lifestyle choices, your score could be a .70 or lower (not ideal).
Humans are inherently inconsistent creatures; we don’t behave the same way each day, and that reflects on our health. The prognosis evaluates all of your actions to make specific recommendations for you so that you can make better decisions to continue toward a positive health state.
